Founded in 1777, California's first civic settlement was originally named El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, a combined tribute to Saint Joseph and the Guadalupe River which was located nearby. The settlement was established in an effort to bring agriculture to the Alta California territory, and all settlers were provided with a monthly stipend and all of the basic materials needed for the new farms, including animals, seeds and tools. The gold rush brought significant prosperity to San Jose, which provided supplies for many of the would-be miners, and the city's growth continued until the boom and bust of the real estate market in 1887. There was $2 million in land sales the day before the market collapsed, and a stall in growth for a long period afterwards.

Still, the city remained prosperous, and was a major center for technological development. Prior to World War II, San Jose was the world's largest canning and dried-fruit-packing center. The city lead the way in mechanical farming equipment, increasing its agricultural output substantially. It was in the 1950s that the city's natural resource, silicon, first transformed the city from a farm town into a true technology capital, as the element is the key component of semiconductors, which are key components of many technological industries. This high-technology revolution renewed the city's growth, which continued into the early 1980s, producing the thriving city which you can now experience today.
